THE VIBE: EASY LIVING BY THE OCEAN

Taghazout was once a sleepy fishing village, now it’s the unofficial surf capital of Morocco. That said, the charm hasn’t gone anywhere.

Think mellow mornings, oceanfront cafés, cats sunbathing on whitewashed steps and evenings spent sipping mint tea as the sunset paints the sky pink, purple and gold.

There’s a special kind of camaraderie here. You come as you are. Surfers swap stories over tagine, locals point out the best surf spots and travellers turn into friends.

Whether you’re staying in a laidback surf house like Taghazout Villa), checking into a boutique surf camp like Amouage, or joining a Yoga Surf Retreat at Villa Mandala, the surf holiday vibe runs strong. Either way, wander the palm-lined streets after a session, and soak up the easygoing spirit that defines Taghazout.

THE SEASONS: WHEN TO GO

Taghazout is the beating heart of Moroccan surf with epic surf conditions year-round.

It’s one of the reasons why Surf Maroc is open every single day. The two main seasons are summer and winter, but the shoulder seasons are awesome too.

Summer season (May to September): The coast lights up with smaller waves — perfect for beginner surfers or anyone looking to enjoy mellow rides and sunshine. It’s also a great time to explore different surf spots, especially those on the more exposed northwest stretch. Occasionally, a fantastic swell rolls through, offering something punchier for the more adventurous.

Winter season (October to April): The surfer’s high season for a reason. This is when Morocco delivers with long and consistent point breaks that have made it a go-to for intermediate and advanced surfers. The variety of spots around Taghazout is second to none. You can be surfing close to your accommodation one moment, then hopping between reef, point and beach breaks the next. This doesn’t mean that beginner surfers can’t visit at this time; there’s always plenty of options along this abundant coastline.

The diversity of the coast means there’s always a wave to match your mood and ability. That’s the beauty of surfing in Morocco.
