At Surf Maroc, we’re lucky to living next to the endless ocean that delivers our famous swell, great surf spots, beautiful beaches and breath-taking views. However, looking a little closer, we face the same problem that everyone is shouting about around the world – plastic.
Sadly strong waves deliver a variety of unwanted plastic gifts to our beaches including bottles, packaging, bags and cartons. Ruining our town, ocean and wildlife in this way in unacceptable and Surf Maroc are determined to help make a change. And step by step, that’s what we’re doing.
Here are just a few things we’ve introduced this month to reduce our plastics and become more eco-friendly:
No one can deny the deliciousness of our smoothies and juices, all made from locally resourced fruit and veg. And now they can be enjoyed through paper straws instead of plastic!
Eco-friendly packed lunch
Every day we send off our surf guides and guests with a hearty packed-lunch to fuel them for a big day in the waves. Now with their own reusable lunch box and wooden cutlery, they can enjoy their meal on the beach guilt-free!
Plastic bottles are a big issue, especially as drinking tap water isn’t recommended in Taghazout. We always ask all of our guests to bring their own water bottles, but instead of refilling them with bottled water, we’ve installed new filtered water fountains. For just a small charge guests can refill their bottles as much as they want without threatening the planet!
Beach litter collection bags
Although plastic objects are most commonly found on our beaches, it’s all litter that’s washed up that causes problems to our environment. Although we employ beach cleaners, often our guests and guides want to lend a hand while they’re at surf spots. So we’ve popped rubbish collection bags into all of our surf vans in case of any litter in found at locations and brought back to be disposed of safely!
Earth Day 2018: End Plastic Pollution
Surf Maroc is excited to be celebrating Earth Day 2018, the world’s largest environmental movement. On 22nd April we’re hosting an event at Amouage dedicated to this year’s theme – End Plastic Pollution. During the day we’ll be litter picking on all of our beaches, and in the afternoon we’re hosting a plastic-free party. The event will include a silent auction, live music from Nathan Ball and Moroccan buffet with all proceeds being donated to Surf Rider Foundation.
If you’d like to come to our Earth Day event, you can see more details here.
Or you can be there in spirit and make a donation to Surfriders Foundation here. Anything you can give will make a huge difference to making our oceans plastic-free and saving the planet.
